Top rot is a common issue for tomatoes, and the cause of the disease is often temperature fluctuations. The disease initially affects the lower fruits, those closest to the ground. It begins at the peduncle, where a brown spot starts to form. This spot then becomes watery, spreads over the entire surface of the tomato, and eventually turns black.
Such tomatoes are inedible and must be disposed of. Another cause of top rot is the lack of calcium in the soil. Without sufficient calcium, the protective function of the plant weakens, making it more vulnerable to disease.
To prevent this, preventive measures must be taken:
- Feed the soil with preparations containing calcium, such as calcium nitrate. If the first symptoms of the disease appear, add calcium in chelated form and observe the results in a few hours.
- Keep in mind that plants do not absorb calcium in hot weather, so it is best to apply treatments during cooler, cloudy days.
- The earlier you notice the disease, the less you will need to use the product.
Brexyl calcium is a highly effective remedy against top rot. To use, dissolve 25 grams of the product in a bucket of water and spray the plants every 14 days. This treatment also helps with ovary formation during the ripening process.
We wish you a good harvest!
