Spring is the ideal time to renew the paint on tree trunks. While this procedure is also done in autumn to protect against sunburn, spring whitening is crucial for guarding against pests. Here’s how to do it correctly.
Preparation Steps:
- Inspect the Trunk: Begin by examining the trunk for any dead wood. Use a metal scraper to remove it. For easy cleanup, place a cloth or tarp under the tree.
- Prepare the Ash Solution: Dissolve 3 kg of ash in hot water, adding 50 g of household soap. This solution can be sprayed on the trunk to help protect it.
Making the Whitewash:
- Create the Whitewash: In a bucket of water, dissolve 3 kg of chalk and add 0.5 kg of copper sulfate. To thicken the solution, include 100 g of casein glue or paste.
- Application: After letting the mixture sit for a couple of hours, apply it to the trunks. Be careful not to apply too thick a layer, as this can cause the whitewash to crack and fall off.
Following these steps will help ensure your trees are protected and looking their best this spring!
