If you plant strawberries in autumn, you can expect your first harvest in spring. However, if you plant them in spring, you’ll only get berries the following year—not in the fall.

How to Plant Strawberries Correctly?

It’s important to transplant strawberries every four years to ensure a healthy crop. Young bushes won’t produce fruit right away—they may yield next year, so it’s best to plant them in mid-August. If planted later, the young bushes may not have enough time to take root before the colder weather arrives.

Plant strawberries in a bed where parsley, lettuce, onions, garlic, radishes, beets, celery, and carrots have previously grown. Avoid planting strawberries after potatoes, eggplants, cabbage, peppers, or cucumbers, as these plants can harbor diseases that affect strawberries.

What Varieties Are Best to Plant?

Select a variety that is disease-resistant and produces large, tasty berries. There are ordinary, remontant, and neutral varieties. Remontant strawberries yield fruit twice in a summer, while neutral varieties can produce a harvest before the first frost.

Some popular varieties include:

  • Bereginya
  • Kimberly
  • Kent
  • Florenc
  • Valery
  • Korona
  • Honey

Among remontant varieties, the best choices are:

  • Selva
  • Elizaveta II
  • Elsanta

For neutral varieties, consider:

  • Diamant
  • Albion
  • Florentina
  • Harmony

Rules for Planting Strawberries

  1. Prepare the soil where you will plant your strawberries. Add a bucket of rotted compost, 20g of potassium salt, 25g of urea, and 45g of superphosphate per 1m². Alternatively, mix a bucket of soil, a bucket of compost, a bucket of well-rotted manure, and a couple of cups of wood ash. Spread this mixture evenly over a 1m² area.
  2. Dig holes 35 cm apart and about 10 cm deep. Water the holes thoroughly and wait for the water to seep in.
  3. Plant the strawberry saplings in the wet holes, making sure that the growth point of the bush is level with the soil surface.
  4. Mulch the beds with black agrofiber, straw, or mowed grass to keep the soil moist and suppress weeds.

To ensure a good harvest, always use high-quality seedlings.
