In the city, in houses and gardens, plantings are often attacked by pests. The most common of these is the spider mite. To prevent its spread, it is crucial to begin combating the mite early, especially during high air temperatures.
There are a variety of mite species. Their impact can vary depending on environmental factors, as they adapt to different conditions. Let’s take a closer look.
The most common type of spider mite, which often affects indoor plants, causes small spots on the underside of leaves. These spots are accompanied by spider webs on the upper surface of the leaves. Red spider mites are most commonly found on violets and balsams, though they can also attack other plants. Cyclamen mites tend to target lemon, geranium, and orchids. Galls can appear on plants, causing the growth of irregularities around the infestation site, and eventually, the plants can suffer from a pervasive stench.
To prevent the infection of plants by spider mites, it is necessary to regularly conduct preventive measures.
How to Recognize a Spider Mite?
Spider mites feed on the juice of plants like roses, which causes the cells to distort and ultimately disrupt photosynthesis.
Keep an eye out for these signs:
- Light spots on the inner side of the leaves.
- Spider webs on parts of the leaves.
- Stunted growth and the shedding of buds.
If you notice these symptoms, carefully trim the affected plants.
What to Do?
- If you plan to plant sprouts near a greenhouse, make sure they are quarantined before planting them.
- Mites thrive in dry air, so try to maintain optimal humidity in the area where your plants are located. Regularly brush the shoots to remove any mites.
- In spring, ensure that water does not accumulate in the axils of the leaves, as this is a common breeding ground for spider mites.
- Remove dry and damaged leaves immediately to prevent the spread of mites.
- Ventilate the area regularly by taking plants outside to reduce humidity and discourage mite infestations.
- Use special treatments for spider mites, following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
