To ensure your indoor plants bloom beautifully, it’s essential to provide them with proper care between flowering seasons. One effective and inexpensive solution is activated charcoal.
1. Why Activated Charcoal Works
Activated charcoal is most commonly used by orchid owners to treat cut areas with its powder, helping to prevent rot and promote healthy growth. However, it offers a range of benefits for all types of indoor plants. Charcoal acts as a sorbent, helping to remove excess moisture and toxic substances from the soil. It also neutralizes soil acidity, removes pollutants, and filters out harmful heavy metals that may enter through dirty air from open windows.
2. How to Apply Activated Charcoal
There are two main ways to use activated charcoal with indoor plants: wet and dry methods.
- Dry Method: For an average-sized plant, grind a couple of activated charcoal tablets into a fine powder. Then, make small holes (about 2 cm deep) in the soil and fill them with the charcoal powder. Cover the holes with soil and lightly moisten the ground. Do not simply place the charcoal tablets on top of the soil, as it will not have the desired effect.
- Wet Method: Dissolve a few activated charcoal tablets in a small amount of water and water the plants with the solution. Make sure that the fertilizer is thoroughly absorbed by the soil.
3. Other Natural Fertilizers
In addition to activated charcoal, you can also feed your plants with banana peel or mandarin peel infusions. To make this infusion, cut one banana or mandarin peel and pour 1000 ml of boiling water over it. Let the mixture steep for three hours before using it to water your plants. Make sure the solution is cool before applying it.
By feeding your plants with these simple, natural fertilizers, you’ll support their growth and help them bloom more vibrantly.
