Aphids are among the most common garden pests, capable of causing serious damage to fruit trees. If not addressed promptly, these small yet dangerous insects can significantly affect your crop. Many gardeners prefer to avoid chemicals, so here are 15 natural methods to help control aphids.
1. Soap Solution
For this method, grate 300 grams of household soap and dissolve it in 2 liters of warm water. Mix well, then add 8 liters of cold water and mix again. If using liquid soap, add 125 ml per bucket of water.
2. Wood Ash
Mix 1 pint can of wood ash with 10 liters of boiling water. Allow this mixture to infuse for several days, then strain.
3. Baking Soda
Dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda or 1 tablespoon of baking powder in 1 liter of warm water. You can also add some soap shavings for extra effectiveness.
4. Birch Tar
Combine 2 tablespoons of liquid or grated household soap in 1 liter of warm water, then add 1 tablespoon of birch tar and mix well. Finally, add 9 liters of water.
5. Kerosene
Add ½ teaspoon of kerosene and a pinch of grated dish soap to a bucket of water.
6. Ammonia
Measure 40 ml of 10% ammonia and mix it into a bucket of water. Adding soap shavings can enhance the solution.
7. Iodine Solution
Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of soap, and 1 teaspoon of iodine in 10 liters of water.
8. Hydrogen Peroxide
Dissolve 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, 2 tablespoons of alcohol, and 100 g of grated laundry soap in a bucket of water.
9. Vinegar
Mix 5 tablespoons of 9% vinegar and a bit of dish soap into 10 liters of water to improve adhesion.
10. Tobacco Infusion
Pour 1 glass of tobacco leaves into 5 liters of boiling water and let it infuse for a day. Filter the resulting infusion before use.
11. Onion Husks
Place 400 g of onion husks in a container, add 10 liters of boiling water, and let it infuse for 2 days. Strain the solution and add some grated soap before spraying.
12. Red Pepper
Grind about 1 kilogram of fresh hot red pepper and mix it with 10 liters of water. Let it steep for 10 days. Use 100 g of this solution per bucket of water for treatment.
13. Mustard
Dissolve 100 g of dry mustard in a bucket of water and let it infuse for 2 days. Dilute this solution with another bucket of water and add a handful of soap shavings.
14. Tomato Tops
Grind about 4 kilograms of fresh tomato tops and fill them with 10 liters of water. Let this mixture infuse for several hours, then boil on low heat for 30 minutes. Cool, strain, and dilute the infusion with water at a 1:4 ratio before use.
15. Celandine
Take 4 kilograms of fresh celandine herb and pour a bucket of boiling water over them. Let it steep for 2 days, then strain and add soap.
Application Tips
For an adult tree, use at least 5 liters of the working solution. It’s best to spray plants in the evening or early morning during dry, windless weather. Start from the top of the plants and work your way down. Repeat treatments throughout the season for best results.
