Remontant raspberry develops differently than other varieties, and it requires special care to thrive.
To determine the variety, you need to wait until berries appear on the bush. Summer raspberries ripen in July, while remontant raspberries ripen in August or early autumn.
Caring for Summer Raspberry Varieties
After the crop has been harvested, raspberries need feeding and protection.
- Pruning
Immediately cut off excess shoots, leaving only 8-10 young and thick ones. Then, add fertilizers.- Pruning is done at ground level, and the shoots should be removed and burned.
- Feeding
- Organic fertilizers: For 1 m², apply 5 kg of manure, 4-5 kg of compost, 5 kg of peat, and 100 g of wood ash.
- Mineral fertilizers: After digging up the soil, add 40 g of potassium and 50 g of superphosphate per bush.
- Avoid using nitrogen fertilizers.
- Watering
Watering is essential. For adult bushes, water 30-40 liters per bush, and for young ones, water 15-20 liters once every 7 days. Stop watering before frost sets in. - Spraying
Insects, bacteria, and fungus may hibernate under the raspberry bushes. After harvest, treat the bushes with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid. Spray twice in August with a 14-day interval. Mulching can also be done to protect the roots.
Everbearing Raspberry
This raspberry variety continues to bear fruit on both old and young shoots. Proper care ensures a steady yield throughout the month.
- Pruning
To preserve the repairing qualities, prune the plants down to ground level. - Feeding
In autumn, everbearing raspberries do not need organic fertilizers because they are high in nitrogen. Instead, use a mineral complex labeled “Autumn,” applying 50-60 g per bush. - Watering
Repairing raspberries are watered once every seven days. Ensure the water amount is substantial. Before the first frost, water abundantly, dig up the soil around the bushes, and cover with mulch. Use materials such as straw, sawdust, or other natural coverings. - Spraying
First, remove plant residues and destroy them. Treat the root circles with products like Aktellik, Intavir, or Fufanon, following the package instructions. To prevent lichen and moss growth, water the soil with a 1% solution of iron sulfate or copper sulfate.
By following these steps, your raspberry bushes will grow and develop well, ensuring a healthy crop next season!
