Before the onset of winter, some flowers need to be covered with insulating material. Roses and clematis should be covered in autumn, when the temperature consistently drops.
If you do it too soon, the plants may not respond well. It’s important to remember that after the first frost, warmer temperatures often follow. The optimal time to cover flowers is when the constant temperature is around -5°C (23°F). This typically occurs from late October to early November.
Some flowers don’t require full coverage, but instead can simply be wrapped with protective material. For extra insulation, you can create small mounds around them. If the soil is heavy, it’s beneficial to mix in sand or peat. The height of the mound can range from 20 cm to 40 cm depending on the size of the flower.
Flowers protected by such a mound will stay warm and better tolerate the harsh winter frosts.
