After successfully harvesting cucumbers and clearing the plants from the beds, your work in the garden isn’t over yet. It’s crucial to assess the condition of the soil where the cucumbers grew. Even if the surface looks unchanged, pathogens and pests may be lurking below.

During the growing season, gardeners focus on feeding plants and combating diseases and pests. However, autumn is the perfect time for special soil treatments to prevent the spread of fungi, bacteria, and pests.

How to Care for the Soil After Cucumber Season:

  1. Copper Sulfate to Fight Fungi: Use a 3-4% solution of copper sulfate to cleanse the soil of fungi, spores, and mold. To prepare a 3% solution, mix 300 g of copper sulfate, 450 g of lime, and 10 liters of water. This treatment should be applied no more than once every 4-5 years.
  2. Garlic Infusion for Disinfection and Pest Repellent: Create a garlic infusion by pouring 500 g of crushed garlic into three liters of water and letting it steep for 2-3 days. Then, dilute it with water to make a total of 10 liters and apply 2 liters of infusion per square meter of soil.
  3. Potassium Permanganate for Soil Treatment: Mix 50 g of potassium permanganate in 10 liters of water and thoroughly water the soil. For enhanced effectiveness, heat the solution to 70°C before applying.

If you’re pressed for time, simply water the soil and cover it with plastic wrap to retain heat, allowing the soil to cool gradually.

Remember, proper care of the soil after harvesting cucumbers is vital for preserving soil fertility and preparing for the next growing season!
