To ensure that your tulips bloom in lush and bright colors come spring, it’s essential to plant the bulbs in autumn. However, there are specific guidelines you should follow for successful planting.
What Should Be Done?
Qualitatively Calibrate the Bulbs
First and foremost, you need to carefully select the tulip bulbs. Purchase them in September when they are still dormant. Tulips are susceptible to fungi and viruses, so it’s crucial to choose healthy bulbs. The bulbs should be:
- Firm and heavy
- Free of roots
- In their natural outer shell
- Undamaged (no rot at the base)
The larger the bulb, the larger the flower stalk (peduncle) will be in the spring, so size matters!
Proper Storage
Tulips should be planted by the end of September or the beginning of October. Before planting, store the bulbs in a dry, well-ventilated room. If the bulbs lack outer scales, it’s best to store them in a bag with moist sawdust or moss. Ensure the bag has air holes for proper circulation.
When and Where Should Tulips Be Planted?
Timing of Planting
Tulips are quick to root, so aim to plant them by the end of September. This ensures they have time to settle before winter and prevents them from growing prematurely or being affected by viral diseases.
Choosing the Right Location
Select a sunny spot for planting, as tulips need plenty of light. Avoid planting them in the same area year after year to prevent the buildup of diseases. By practicing crop rotation, your tulips will be less likely to encounter problems.
Correct Planting Method
Preparing the Bulbs
Before planting, soak the bulbs for 30 minutes in a solution of manganese, or use a fungicide like “Maxim” or “Fundazol” to help protect them from diseases.
Preparing the Planting Site
- Dig holes 25 cm deep for larger bulbs and 15 cm deep for smaller ones.
- Space the bulbs 12 cm apart.
- Place a 3 cm layer of sand and expanded clay at the bottom of each hole to promote drainage.
- Mix the soil with wood ash in a 2:1 ratio and use this mixture to cover the bulbs after planting.
Once planted, make sure to water the beds thoroughly.
Timely Protection
As winter approaches, in November or December, cover your tulip beds with a protective layer of compost, dried leaves, or grass. The mulch should be at least 7 cm thick to protect the bulbs from the cold.
