To ensure your gooseberries thrive year after year, follow these three essential rules for post-harvest care. By adhering to these guidelines, you can guarantee a bountiful berry harvest.
Moisturizing:
After harvesting, proper moisture is crucial for gooseberry bushes. Water them three times: at the end of September, and twice in October—first at the beginning and then in the middle of the month.
Each bush requires approximately 5 buckets of water per watering session. Allow a 10-day interval between each watering.
Nutrition:
Feeding is essential for healthy growth. After harvesting, apply fertilizers rich in potassium and phosphorus. Mix 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate with 5 tablespoons of superphosphate, and distribute the mixture under each bush. Remember to water the bushes afterward.
In September, apply a mixture of 1.5 tablespoons of double superphosphate and 4 tablespoons of potassium sulfate around the base of each bush. Ensure the mixture is watered in well.
At the end of October, feed the bushes with cow manure. Apply after berry picking and again in early August.
Pruning:
Post-harvest pruning is vital for maintaining plant health. Remove any dry or diseased branches immediately after harvesting. Leave only 5 healthy shoots. In August, prune all shoots from the current year.
Following these guidelines diligently will ensure robust growth and abundant harvests of gooseberries. Happy gardening and may your harvests be plentiful!
