How to Properly Care for Marigolds to Achieve Lush Flowering

Marigolds are commonly grown in flower beds and allotments. These beautiful flowers are not demanding in their care, which makes them a favorite among many gardeners. In this guide, we’ll show you how to care for marigolds so that they bloom abundantly and magnificently.

How to Plant Marigolds Correctly?

Before planting, it’s important to know the type of marigold. Since they come in various sizes, it’s best to choose a low variety for pot cultivation. If you plant in July, opt for a small sprouted bush that can be directly placed in its permanent spot.

How to Plant Flower Seeds Correctly?

  • Make an indentation 5 cm deep in the soil.
  • Loosen and spray the soil to prepare it.
  • Sow the seeds and cover them with a light layer of soil.
  • In a couple of weeks, you’ll see the seedlings emerge. As the seedlings grow, they may become dense, so you should thin them out and replant them. Don’t forget to water the soil regularly to prevent it from drying out.

Care Rules in the Flower Bed

  • Plant the seedlings after they’ve been picked. If the seedlings are weak, wait for about 30 days until they become stronger. If they are in good condition, transplant them after 14 days.
  • Plant the marigolds when the night temperature is around 6°C.
  • Use loamy soils for best growth.
  • Space the plants about 15 cm apart, or 40 cm apart if the bushes are larger.
  • Water the flowers in the evening and ensure that water doesn’t accumulate under the bushes.
  • While you don’t have to feed marigolds, if you wish, provide three feedings during the growing season:
    1. During active growth (when seedlings reach about 10 cm), use a solution of ¼ tbsp urea in 2.5 liters of water.
    2. During budding, apply an aqueous solution of superphosphate or potassium sulfate.
    3. During flowering, use a solution of 30 grams of nitrophoska in a bucket of water.
  • Always moisten the soil before feeding and use complex fertilizers or humus.
  • Regularly loosen the soil, remove weeds, and deadhead any faded flowers.
