Many gardeners enjoy cultivating apple trees on their properties. While these trees are hardy and adaptable, providing optimal growing conditions will ensure a bountiful harvest. Apple trees thrive best in neutral soils, avoiding alkaline, acidic, clay, and marshy environments. Additionally, planting in a lowland can trap cold air, which is detrimental to young trees. Ensure that groundwater is no closer than 150 cm to the surface. If your plot is small, it’s advisable to plant the tree along the north or northeast line. For spacing:

  • Tall trees: 600 cm apart
  • Medium-sized trees: 300 cm apart
  • Short trees: 150 cm apart

If you live in a warm climate, autumn is the best time to plant, ideally a month before frost. In regions with a more temperate climate, aim to plant in April. Prepare the planting pit in advance: dig it 20 days prior for autumn planting and during the autumn for spring planting. For tall trees, the hole should be 60 cm deep and 120-150 cm in diameter. For shorter trees, make the hole 40 cm deep and 90 cm wide. If the soil is dense, the hole depth should be at least 50 cm. Remember to loosen the bottom of the hole with a crowbar.

Steps to Plant an Apple Tree:

1. Prepare the Hole
Drive a stick into the center of the hole. Fill one-third of the hole with fertile soil mixed with fertilizers, then add regular soil.

2. Form a Mound
Compact the earth slightly and create a hill in the center of the hole.

3. Position the Seedling
Place the seedling in the middle, ensuring the root collar is 5 cm above ground level. Carefully spread the roots in the pit and cover them with soil. Lightly loosen the soil to eliminate any air pockets.

4. Create a Water Retention Edge
The edges of the pit should be 10 cm higher than the surrounding ground to retain water during irrigation. Tie the tree to the stick and proceed to water it.

5. Fertilize
Apply three buckets of rotted manure, along with 150 grams each of superphosphate and potassium fertilizers. Additionally, mix in 1000 grams of ash. If the soil is acidic, include 600 grams of dolomite flour.

By following these steps, your apple tree will have the best chance to take root quickly and grow robustly!
