Cucumbers are not particularly capricious when it comes to growing, but understanding the proper ways to care for them is essential. In July, you can enhance their fertility. Here’s how you can do it effectively.
At this time, it’s important to water the cucumbers once a week and remove weeds between the rows. This is how most people care for cucumbers, but often results in a smaller harvest. To achieve better results, you need to take a comprehensive approach and consider all the necessary details.
Hydration
After flowering, cucumbers require plenty of moisture, which should be applied both under the root and on the leaves. Alternate between watering under the roots in the morning and on the leaves in the evening. 10 liters of water per 1 m² is sufficient. Don’t forget to add fertilizers to the water. The soil should be moistened to a depth of 20 cm, and the moistening radius should extend to 15 cm. Be sure that the root collar remains dry during watering.
Feeding
In July, cucumbers need to be properly fed to strengthen the plant and improve its immune system against pests and diseases. Proper fertilizing helps prolong fruiting into the late autumn.
It’s essential not to feed cucumbers with nitrogen fertilizers, as this can cause the bushes to waste their energy, resulting in a small harvest. Instead, focus on potassium and phosphorus fertilizers. For the first feeding, use nitrophoska—one tablespoon per bucket of water. Alternatively, mix 500 ml of mullein with one tablespoon of potassium sulfate. A third feeding will help continue fruiting throughout the season.
Mulching
Mulching is another key aspect of cucumber care. It helps retain moisture and reduce weed growth, making maintenance much easier.
Rules for Collecting Cucumbers:
- Do not turn the whips during harvesting, as they will waste energy trying to return the leaves to the sun.
- Cut cucumbers with part of the stem attached.
- If a cucumber breaks during storage, do not leave part of it on the bush, as it will begin to rot.
- Harvest cucumbers every 3 days to prevent them from overgrowing.
- Timely collection of cucumbers will lead to an increased yield.
By following these steps, you can ensure a fruitful harvest of cucumbers well into the autumn months.
