January is an ideal month for sowing flower seeds and some garden crops. Starting seedlings during this period gives them a head start for a vibrant garden later in the year. Here’s a guide to the flowers you can plant in January and tips on how to sow them properly.

1. Eustoma Flowers

  • Planting: Sow seeds in peat tablets for easy handling and better growth.
  • Care: Grow the seedlings in a well-lit area, and be sure to water them without getting the water on the leaves.

2. Large Antirrhinum (Snapdragon)

  • Planting: Prepare a container, moisten the soil, and then sow the seeds. Cover with plastic film to retain moisture.
  • Care: In about a week, you’ll see seedlings (or “stairs”). After 30 days, transplant them into separate containers. Once the spring frosts have passed, move them to a permanent spot in the garden.

3. Hybrid Verbena

  • Planting: Choose a flower soil mix for sowing. Keep the seedlings in a room with a temperature of 18-20°C.
  • Care: After about 10 days, water the seedlings once they emerge. The seeds may not all germinate at the same time. Once they are strong enough, transplant the seedlings to your garden.

4. Lobelia Erinus

  • Planting: Sow the seeds under a plastic film and wait for the seedlings to appear. Keep them out of direct sunlight to avoid damage.
  • Care: When seedlings appear, transplant them separately into individual sprouts. By June, you’ll be able to enjoy the flowers.

5. Meconopsis Sheldon (Blue Poppy)

  • Planting: Grow seeds in soft soil at a temperature of 12°C with good lighting.
  • Care: Once the seedlings appear, transplant each sprout into its own space. These blue poppies can be moved to the garden in May.

6. Carpathian Bluebell

  • Planting: Mix sand, humus, and soil, then sow the seeds and cover lightly with soil.
  • Care: After 21 days, you should see the seedlings (or “stairs”). These flowers can be transplanted to open ground in May.

7. Hybrid Delphinium

  • Planting: Sow the seeds in small containers, then bury them in the snow to simulate cold stratification.
  • Care: When the seedlings develop a couple of leaves, transplant them to a bright area for further growth.

8. Garden Carnation

  • Planting: Sow the seeds in river sand and ensure the soil remains moist. The sowing depth should be around 3 mm.
  • Care: Cover the seeds with a plastic bag until they sprout. Once they appear, move the seedlings to a well-lit location for further growth.

By sowing these flowers in January, you’ll give them a strong start, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful garden later in the year. Just remember to provide the right growing conditions, and you’ll be rewarded with stunning blooms!
