To ensure your gooseberries develop well and produce a rich harvest every year, follow these three important care rules:
Moisturizing:
After the harvest, the gooseberry bush needs sufficient moisture to support healthy growth. It should be watered three times: at the end of September, the beginning of October, and mid-October.
- Each bush will need 5 buckets of water.
- Take a 10-day break between each watering to allow proper absorption.
Nutrition:
At the end of summer, feeding the bush is essential to promote healthy development. This should be done after the harvest, at the end of September and October.
- After fruiting, apply fertilizers that are rich in potassium and phosphorus.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate with 5 tablespoons of superphosphate.
- Pour the mixture under the bush and lightly loosen the soil. Follow up with watering.
- In September, use 1.5 tablespoons of double superphosphate and 4 tablespoons of potassium sulfate around the base and moisten the soil.
- At the end of October, fertilize with cow manure. Additional feeding can be done after berry picking and at the beginning of August.
Pruning:
After fruiting, it’s important to prune the bush to ensure its health and future production.
- Remove any dry or diseased branches.
- Leave 5 healthy shoots and trim any new growth from this year by August.
By following these steps, your gooseberries will thrive and provide you with a bountiful harvest year after year!
