To grow healthy seedlings, it’s essential to steam the soil before using it in your garden. This process helps eliminate harmful pathogens, particularly those that cause fungal diseases, ensuring the soil is safe and fertile for planting.
How to Steam Soil:
One effective method is to use a water bath. Here’s how you can do it:
- Place the soil in a sieve and add potatoes in the middle. The potatoes help ensure even heat distribution.
- Set the sieve over a water bath and bring the water to a boil. Let it steam for about 15 minutes.
- If the potatoes have become soft, the soil is properly steamed and ready to use.
After steaming, let the soil rest for a couple of weeks to cool down. If time is limited and planting is imminent, you can treat the soil with EM preparation. This product contains lactic acid bacteria, fermenting elements, fungi, and yeast, all of which support healthy soil and plant growth.
By steaming the soil before sowing, you significantly reduce the risk of soil-borne diseases, giving your seedlings the best start.
